The one thing this game really loves to focus on is its plot. Parappa the Rapper is a rhythm game, so there was never a need for anything complex; the original game was just about the titular character wanting to win over the heart of his crush, Sunny Funny. That's it, and that's all that's needed. Even when UmJammer Lammy, the unnumbered sequel, had plenty of chaos leading to one thing after another, the overarching plot was still clearly about Lammy trying to get to her first concert performance in time. Here in Parappa 2? There's an outbreak of SPAGHETTI NOODLES!! Noodles are taking over the world! People are growing afros! Parappa's dad is experimenting with a de-noodlizing invention that involves a rare obscure video game! Parappa is...practicing adult dances with his best friend, PJ???
Yeah, it's safe to say I'm not a fan of the story emphasis. Everything feels like chaos is thrown in for the sake of constantly trying to grab the player's interest when that should have been done with the gameplay and catchy rhymes. The visuals are at least pretty and cartoonish, so it does at least have that going for it; there could even be a genuinely funny moment here and there, but I was left cringing in many places. The voice acting is a mixture of improvement and downgrade, but to be fair, I guess if I were a voice actor, I too wouldn't be able to relate to anything that was happening onscreen.
Anyway, enough about presentation. This is a video game, after all, and for the Playstation 2 no less. How does it compare to the previous games? Eh..Not as well. Not only do the plot issues tend to carry over into the content of each level, but the melodies and even several of the lyrics feel flat and uninspired. Considering that this is a rhythm title, it really does hurt the game. With the music lacking the energy the previous games had, there are times where I would end up just looking at the button prompts without paying as much attention to the rhymes. And whereas UmJammer Lammy succeeding in adding extra content by having a mode where you play as Parappa in special versions of the game's levels, Parappa 2 takes a step backward and adds nothing new upon beating all of its eight stages.
I'm not saying Parappa the Rapper 2 is a BAD game per se, but rather one trying to be way too hard to be better than the original, ironically losing its punch in the process. The rhythm gameplay itself, in which you press buttons in an elaborate take on Simon Says against each level's teacher, still works as much as it ever had, and again, the cartoon vibes the game gives this time around can benefit its atmosphere. But when a game that relies on its music and charm ends up having lacking tunes and energy, it becomes a considerably flawed music game. As such, I highly suggest just sticking with the Playstation 1 Parappa games.
